Chris Caplice

Director, MITx MicroMasters Program in Supply Chain Management, Silver Family Research Fellow, Executive Director, MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics (CTL)

Dr. Caplice has been teaching logistics and supply chain management at MIT for over a decade. He is also responsible for the planning and management of the research, education, and corporate outreach programs for the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics as well as MIT’s Global SCALE Network. He is also the Chief Scientist for Chainalytics, a leading analytical supply chain consulting firm. He received a Ph.D. from MIT in 1996 in Transportation and Logistics Systems, a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI).

Eva Ponce

Executive Director, MITx MicroMasters Program in Supply Chain Management, Lecturer and Research Associate

Dr. Ponce oversees the five online MITx courses in Supply Chain Management (CTL.SCx courses) that make up the MicroMasters Program. She is a Research Associate at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics. Her current research focus is the design of urban distribution models (freight deliveries) with a special focus on omni-channel distribution strategies. She also leads research initiatives on Reverse Logistics and Closed-Loop Supply Chains. Dr. Ponce has over fifteen years of experience in teaching and research in supply chain management and quantitative models for industrial engineering. In 2008, she received her tenure as an Associate Professor in Supply Chain Management and Logistics at the School of Industrial Engineering of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM).

Yossi Sheffi

Elisha Gray II Professor of Engineering Systems, MIT, Professor, MIT Civil and Environmental Engineering, Director, MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics

Dr. Sheffi is a former director of MIT's Engineering Systems Division and holds a dual appointment at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and at the Engineering Systems Division. He is an expert in systems optimization, risk analysis, and supply chain management, which are the subjects he teaches and researches at MIT. He is the author of dozens of scientific publications and three books. Outside the university, Professor Sheffi is an active entrepreneur, having founded five successful companies, and a sought-after speaker in corporate and professional events. He obtained his B.Sc. from the Technion in Israel in 1975, his S.M. from MIT in 1977, and his Ph.D. from MIT in 1978.

James Rice

Deputy Director, MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics, Director, Integrated Supply Chain Management Program, Director, Supply Chain Exchange Program

Jim Rice joined the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics (CTL) in 1995 and he was appointed as the Deputy Director of the Center in 2007. In this capacity, he oversees several research and outreach programs, CTL Executive Education Programs, and outreach marketing activities. As part of these roles, Jim works with industry sponsors to develop research projects and educational and knowledge-sharing events for the sponsors. He is also a Lecturer in the Supply Chain Management program teaching Supply Chain Finance. Prior to joining MIT, Jim managed manufacturing and distribution operations at Procter & Gamble and served as a sales and market manager at General Electric Company. Jim earned his MBA in Operations and Finance from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame.

Jarrod Goentzel

Director, MIT Humanitarian Response Lab, Lecturer and Research Associate

Dr. Goentzel is the founder and director of the MIT Humanitarian Response Lab in the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics. His research focuses on meeting human needs in resource-constrained settings through better supply chain management, information systems, and decision support technology. Dr. Goentzel has created graduate-level courses in humanitarian logistics, international operations, and supply chain finance, and has extensive experience using simulation games to build intuition and leadership skills. Dr. Goentzel received a Ph.D. from the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, an M.S. in applied mathematics from Colorado State University, and a B.A. in mathematics from Tabor College with studies at the Technical University of Budapest (Hungary).

Bruce Arntzen

Former Executive Director, Supply Chain Management Program, Retired Lecturer, and Senior Research Director

Dr. Arntzen is the former Executive Director of, MIT Supply Chain Management Program where he oversaw the SCM curriculum, student admissions, faculty selection, and student job placement. He served as the faculty advisor, oversaw hundreds of Master’s theses, and taught the course “Global Supply Chain Management.” As a Research Director, he led the MIT Hi-Viz Supply Chain project which developed automated board-ready visualizations of the supply chain and its critical risk pathways. Dr. Arntzen founded two supply chain consulting firms, led industrial engineering and operations planning groups at Digital Equipment Corp., performed operations management consulting at Arthur D. Little, Inc., and served as an economic analyst at The World Bank in Washington, DC. An expert on Supply Chain Risk Management and International Supply Chain Operations, he remains a frequent speaker at industry conferences including CSCMP, WERC, APICS, OIA, and INFORMS. He has thrice served as the President of the New England Chapter of CSCMP. Dr. Arntzen holds a BA and BS from Bucknell University, an MSE from Johns Hopkins, and a Ph.D. from MIT.

Chris Cassa

Lecturer, MIT Supply Chain Management Program, Assistant Professor, Harvard Medical School

Christopher Cassa, PhD., is a Lecturer in Supply Chain Management at MIT, an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a Geneticist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Cassa has served as a lecturer of data analytics and software engineering subjects at MIT for 10 years. His research laboratory conducts predictive analytics research in the assessment of genomic variants. This application draws on “big data” approaches to enable unprecedented extraction of information from existing information sources.

Laura Allegue – Course Lead

Laura Allegue is a Course Lead in the MITx MicroMasters Program in Supply Chain Management at the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics. Laura received her Master of Applied Sciences in Supply Chain Management from MIT and her Master of Business Administration from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Laura has over ten years of experience in procurement, leading sourcing of strategic services in the industry, and joined the academic world to combine her expertise with her passion for education and in-company training. She is an expert in strategic sourcing, contract negotiation, risk analysis, and cost control applied to procurement processes. Her main research interests are supply chain sustainability and responsible sourcing. She is also contributing to the future of education research at the MIT Omnichannel Education Lab.

Jeff Baker - Course Lead

Jeff Baker is a Course Lead in the MITx MicroMasters Program in Supply Chain Management.

Kellen Betts - Program Manager, Sustainability Research & Course Lead

Kellen Betts is a Course Lead in the MITx MicroMasters Program in Supply Chain Management and a Project Manager supporting sustainability-related research at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics including the State of Supply Chain Sustainability, carbon insetting with sustainable aviation fuels, and the circular supply chain initiative.

Kellen has over fifteen years of experience in supply chain and analytics working for small businesses and Fortune 500 corporations. He writes the blog/newsletter Sustainable Supply Chains, exploring the sustainability of global supply chains, and organizes Supply Chain Connect, an annual conference on supply chain management and technology. Inma Borrella - Research Scientist, Academic Lead

Dr. Inma Borrella is a Research Scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics (MIT CTL). Her main research interest is how digitalization and new technologies are transforming supply chain processes and relationships. She is currently exploring the potential impact of blockchain applications in supply chain management and coordinates the Blockchain Research Group at MIT CTL. She has over seven years of teaching experience, both in-person and online. At present, she is part of the MITx MicroMasters in Supply Chain Management program, where she leads Massive Online Courses and coordinates the on-campus MIT SCx Supply Chain Bootcamp program. Heeryung Choi - Postdoctoral Associate, Course Lead

Dr. Heeryung Choi is a digital learning postdoctoral researcher working to improve MicroMasters Supply Chain Management Program offered by the Center for Transportation & Logistics (CTL). Her research interests currently focus on how to improve online learners’ learning experience. In 2022, her ongoing Meta-LAD project received a MITili grant. She also works as a course lead of SC0x Supply Chain Analytics. 

Prior to joining MIT, Dr. Choi received her Ph.D. in Information at the University of Michigan. Her dissertation “SRLA: Self-Regulated Learning Analytics” was on how to support and measure online learners’ self-regulated learning. She also holds an MSc degree in cognitive science and a BA degree in English Education which she earned at the Seoul National University. View bio.

Lisa Kim - Digital Marketing and Communications Administrator

Lisa serves as the Digital Marketing and Communications Administrator for the MIT Supply Chain Management Masters Program and The MITx MicroMasters Supply Chain Management Program. She supports both teams as a creative and technical expert in enrollment marketing, social media management, website development, and program development.

Lisa brings years of prior experience in the education industry at The Princeton Review, and at a 360 Photography-based startup. She is from Colorado and has graduated from the University of California - Berkeley with a BA in Media Studies, and Journalism. View bio.

Connor Makowski - Research Associate, Digital Learning Lead

Connor currently serves as a Research Associate, the CAVE Lab Project Manager, and the Supply Chain MicroMasters Digital Learning Lead. He specializes in algorithms and coding related to simulation, optimization, machine learning, databases, statistics, online education, and blockchain. For the MicroMasters, Connor researches user patterns, develops applications, and implements them into the edX learning environment. These applications include simple tools that engage students in advanced machine learning algorithms that ensure academic honesty and prevent students from dropping out. His team also automates redundant processes for the course staff. View bio.

Emma Perakis is the Marketing and Communications Social Media Administrator for the MIT Supply Chain Management Masters Program and The MITx MicroMasters Supply Chain Management Program.

Miguel Rodríguez García - Postdoctoral Associate, Course Lead

Miguel Rodríguez-García is a Digital Learning Postdoctoral Associate and researcher at MIT CTL. In digital learning, he works in the development, research and management of the MIT MicroMasters Program in Supply Chain Management.

His research focuses on the design of logistics and supply chain strategies for omnichannel retailers that combine traditional and online sales. He received his PhD on E-grocery Supply Chain Management from the Industrial Engineering School at the University of Vigo, Spain, in 2021. His PhD work aimed to serve as a guide so that omnichannel retailers in the e-grocery industry can choose the most suitable e-fulfillment strategies from a cost perspective. View bio.

Paulo Sousa Jr - Digital Learning Specialist, Course Lead

Paulo Sousa Jr is a Course Lead in the MITx MicroMasters Program in Supply Chain Management. Paulo has over fifteen years of experience in supply chain and analytics in the transportation and semi-conductor industries. He has worked in supply chain, data science, engineering and managerial roles in both public and private sectors, combining his experience to a strong academical background. Paulo received his Master of Applied Sciences in Supply Chain Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – MIT and his Master of Transport Studies from the University of Brasilia.
